Brewery waste to join sewage in powering british homes
A new plant has been opened in Suffolk which generates gas from brewery waste. This joins a plant in Oxfordshire which converts raw sewage into biogas. The process involves converting malted barley, a leftover from beer production, into methane through the process of anaerobic digestion. Food waste from Waitrose is also added to the process.
The plant, owned by Adnams brewery, produces gas which is sent to around nearby 235 homes. They explain that brewing 600 pints of beer produces enough gas to run an average household.
Minster for Climate Change, Greg Barker, said "This has been an excellent week for progress in renewable energy."
"Adnams Bio Energy is setting a fantastic example in bringing the community together to tackle climate change."
