


Students Reminded to Keep Safe with Gas
The Gas Safe Register has warned the new intake of students of the dangers of poor gas safety.
With freshers week taking place across the country this week and next the last thing on many students mind’s is Gas Safety. However the Gas Safety Register warn of the dangers of poor gas maintenance and poor workmanship.
To encourage students to be “Gas Safe” they have launched a “Stay Safe in Your Student House” leaflet which can be downloaded from the website. It highlights the importance of all aspects of Gas Safety along with the dangers which are associated with Gas. Referring the the case in 2007 when six Oxford students scarcely escaped a catastrophe when a gas leak emerged from their cooker (The Oxford Student). The high gas levels where detected by a Carbon Monoxide Alarm, highlighting the importance of the devices.
It is the landlord’s responsibility to service all gas appliances annually including Gas Cookers, Boilers, Hobs and Fires, using a Gas Safe Registered Engineer. The Landlords must, legally, provide tenants with a gas safety certificate to prove annual check have been undertaken.
Although Students can also play their part in keeping gas safe. Including looking out for signs of carbon monoxide, which can include flames burning with a floppy or yellow flame rather than a blue crisp flame. Along with checking the Gas Engineers ID card.
The overall message to students is to co-operate with landlords, check ID cards and Install a Carbon Monoxide alarm.
