The Worlds Largest Wind Farm Has Opened In The UK
The Wind Farm, operated by Vattenfall, consists of 100 wind turbines which can be seen off the coast of Kent. The project cost totaled £900 million, and took two years to build. The wind turbines are expected to generate 300 MW of energy.
The energy secretary, Chris Huhne, said the farm can produce enough energy to “to power all homes in Scotland”. He also highlighted the advantages of being an island when generating green energy. Huhne added “We are in a unique position to become a world leader in this industry. We are an island nation and I firmly believe we should be harnessing our wind, wave and tidal resources to the maximum.”
However controversy was raised due to the number of jobs which went to UK workers. Only 30% of the 3500 jobs generated by the wind farm, went to UK workers.
There are currently around 260 wind farms operating around the coast of the UK and wind power accounts for about 4% of the electricity.
