Tradesmen Contracts

After you have decided to employee a Tradesman to do a job in your house a written contract should be drawn up. If the tradesman is reliable and reputable they should agree to sign a written contract. Even if you use a Local Tradesman you should still draw up

Local Tradesmen Contracts.

What should Tradesmen Contracts include?

There are many samples of contracts on the internet, but these are the key points, a contract with your tradesman, should include.

  • Contact details for the tradesman, including a full address and contact number, preferably a landline number.
  • Payment details and schedule. i.e. how you will be expected to pay e.g cheque, cash or card. When you will be expected to pay and how much. Do not pay the full amount of the project upfront, there should be a detailed payment plan in your contract.
  • The expected length of the project, when it will begin and finish.
  • Material specifications, makes and types.
  • If the tradesmen is sorting out permits or planning permission. Details of confirmation of these should be in the contract.
  • Any warranties or guarantees offered with the project.

These are only a few key points your contract should include. Each building project is going to be different, so will require slightly different terms. A contract does not have to drawn up from a solicitor, to make it legal. You can draw up a contract yourself or the tradesman may have a temple of a contract he uses. Remember to read of of the terms in a contract, especially the small print and know what you are agreeing to before you sign it.
